Click-and-reserve
Click-and-reserve lets consumers reserve an item online for free and pay only when they pick it up in store.
Definition
Click-and-reserve lets consumers reserve a product online through a retailer’s online shop or marketplace without paying for it at the time of reservation. Payment happens only when the item is collected in store. This is the key difference from click-and-collect, where the purchase (including payment) is completed online before pickup.
Click-and-reserve vs. Click-and-collect
Both formats connect online browsing with in-store pickup, but they diverge on commitment. With click-and-reserve, the consumer isn't locked into the purchase: they can inspect the item in person and decide not to buy it. With click-and-collect, the sale is already final by the time the consumer arrives; the store visit is purely for pickup. Click-and-reserve therefore carries more flexibility for the consumer, but also more uncertainty for the retailer, since a reservation is not a guaranteed sale.
Why customers use click-and-reserve
- Try before you buy: consumers can check quality, color, size, or fit in person before committing to payment
- No financial risk upfront: nothing is charged until the item is actually collected
- Combines both worlds: the convenience of browsing online with the certainty of seeing the product before paying
Why retailers offer click-and-reserve
- Drives store visits: a reservation gives consumers a concrete reason to come into the store rather than shopping exclusively online
- Additional in-store revenue: consumers picking up a reserved item are already in the store and often buy more while there, particularly in high-traffic retail locations
- Builds customer relationships: the in-person pickup moment creates a touchpoint that a purely online purchase doesn't offer
What this means operationally
Because click-and-reserve doesn't guarantee a completed sale, retailers need to manage reserved stock carefully. An item held for one consumer for too long, without a clear reservation window, ties up inventory that could otherwise be sold. This makes reliable inventory management essential: the system needs to track what's reserved, for how long, and release it back into available stock if the consumer doesn't show up. The Global Inventory Hub manages reservations like these as part of one real-time view of stock across all locations. In the store, staff need to set reserved items aside and hand them over at pickup, which the Store Operations app supports.
