AI Agent

An AI agent is software that pursues a goal on its own: it observes data, makes decisions and takes actions within defined limits. In order management, AI agents monitor orders and resolve issues in real time.

Definition

An AI agent is software that pursues a goal on its own. Unlike a chatbot, which only answers questions, an agent observes data, plans steps, uses tools and takes actions within limits people define. Most AI agents are built on large language models (LLMs) with access to company data and functions.

‍

AI agents vs. automation

Rule-based automation runs the same steps every time and fails when a situation isn’t covered by a rule. An AI agent weighs several goals and chooses a suitable action, even in situations no one planned for. Many businesses combine both: automation for standard steps, agents where judgment adds value.

‍

AI agents in order management

  • Routing orders: choosing the best location based on cost, speed, margin and capacity, as part of order routing.
  • Monitoring orders: acting when the delivery promise is at risk, for example by rerouting, splitting or switching carriers.
  • Answering questions: giving teams instant answers about orders, stock and performance.

‍

AI governance

Agents act on their own, but within limits. AI governance defines which decisions an agent may take alone, which need human approval and how each decision is logged. Transparency is key, especially in enterprise retail.
